Dear Resident,

We write to share our concerns about the number of sewage blockages occurring in our local drainage system and to ask for your help.

Unfortunately, we have experienced repeated blockages within a foul manhole. Upon investigation, these blockages have been found to be primarily caused by wet wipes and other non-flushable items being flushed down toilets.

When sewerage systems become blocked, the consequences can affect the entire community. Blockages can cause sewage to overflow, creating unpleasant conditions and potential health hazards, as well as polluting the local environment.

Wet wipes seem to be making up more than 90% of the material causing our sewers to block. Despite some being marketed as “flushable”, unfortunately wet wipes do not break down in the sewerage system like toilet paper.

Toilets are designed to handle only three things: waste, toilet paper, and water. Items such as wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton buds, and dental floss will cause blockages, and should be disposed of in your household waste bin, rather than in the toilet.

We would really appreciate it if all of our residents could be mindful of what is getting flushed, and together, we can prevent further unpleasant blockages while protecting our local environment.

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and for helping us to keep the sewerage system running smoothly.
