Pupils from Orchard Grove Primary School have seen their creative work come to life on the streets of Orchard Grove. The children were invited to submit designs for speed reduction signs as part of a competition run by Taylor Wimpey.
The brief was straightforward: create signs that would encourage drivers to slow down and keep the development’s roads safe for residents and visitors. The collaboration reflects the school’s position at the heart of the growing Comeytrowe community.
Several pupils were selected as winners, with their designs being installed around the development. The successful designers received gift vouchers for their efforts.
Clare Strange, Business Manager at the school, said: “We’re thankful to Taylor Wimpey for giving our pupils such an amazing opportunity. The design competition provided our pupils with the chance to think outside the box creatively.”
As one of Somerset’s newest primary schools, Orchard Grove operates as part of the Blackdown Education Partnership, serves families from the new development as well as the surrounding area.
Head teacher Richard Healey has previously spoken about the school’s focus on developing pupils’ understanding of citizenship and their responsibility to the wider community. Projects like the sign design competition provide practical opportunities for children to engage with local issues whilst developing their creative skills.
