Plans are advancing to improve Orchard Grove’s connectivity to Taunton city centre and the surrounding community, thanks to a new ‘red route’. Part of the Taunton Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which was published in 2022, plans are moving forward to bolster the town’s active travel network.

The Red Route: Connecting Communities

The ‘red route,’ a major artery for cyclists and pedestrians, has been designed to begin in the Pyrland area in the north, extending southward through Taunton, and terminating at Orchard Grove.

The route passes through several key regeneration sites, Taunton railway station, the High Street, and Vivary Park, before reaching the Sherford residential area.

This route is designed to offer a safe and convenient pathway for residents and visitors, connecting them with the heart of Taunton.

Ongoing and Upcoming Developments

Significant progress has already been made; a revamped crossing over the A38 Upper High Street, linking Vivary Park to High Street and the Market House roundabout, was completed this month.

Additional enhancements, including the creation of a boulevard through the Firepool site and the widening of an existing footbridge, are expected to be completed within the next 12 months.

These developments are part of Somerset Council’s broader strategy to use funds from the government’s Future High Street Fund to strengthen connections between key regeneration sites and the town centre.

Future Plans

With these crucial sections of the ‘red route’ nearing completion, Somerset Council is now exploring funding options to enhance the segment south of Vivary Park.

A council spokesperson stated, “Regarding the improvements to the north-south LCWIP route, we are currently looking at our funding options. Depending on how that progresses, it will impact on what we’re able to deliver for this route.”

In March, the council secured nearly £410,000 from Active Travel England to design and develop new active travel schemes, which could attract additional capital funding from central government or other sources. This financial support would play a key role in advancing the final stages of the ‘red route’ project.

Impact on Orchard Grove

Once completed, the ‘red route’ will provide Orchard Grove residents with a direct, accessible link to the city centre and key locations within Taunton, encouraging more sustainable travel options and fostering a closer-knit community.
