Orchard Grove Primary School was transformed into a literary wonderland on 6th March as pupils and staff celebrated World Book Day with enthusiasm and creativity.
The school corridors were filled with characters straight from the pages of beloved books as children arrived dressed as their favourite literary figures. Reception pupils showcased an impressive variety of costumes including Super Mario, mermaids, the Gruffalo, Batman, and Elsa from Frozen. Year 1 students joined in with equal excitement, arriving as The Incredible Hulk, Harry Potter, fairies, animals and unicorns.
The day began with a special assembly where children had the opportunity to show off their costumes to the whole school. Following this, pupils immersed themselves in storytelling activities, reading “Billy’s Bucket” and bringing traditional tales to life through dramatic performances.
Creative activities continued throughout the day with children crafting story spoons – decorating wooden spoons to represent book characters – and designing colourful bookmarks. The celebration concluded with a visit from a mystery reader who captivated the children with an engaging story session.
“What an amazing World Book Day we have had at Orchard Grove!” said a school spokesperson. “The children brought their wonderful imaginations to life, and it was delightful to see their enthusiasm for books and reading.”
World Book Day, celebrated annually on the first Thursday in March across the United Kingdom and Ireland, provides every child in full-time education with a book voucher. The initiative aims to foster a love of reading among children – a skill that research shows is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success.
The charity event has grown beyond its origins to become a much-loved celebration embraced by book enthusiasts and communities worldwide, with data showing that children who participate in World Book Day activities enjoy reading more, talk about books more frequently, and make more time for reading in their daily lives.
