A new care home is set to become part of the growing Orchard Grove community now that it is fully funded and ready to be built. The 68-bedroom residence, which will be developed on the ’employment land’ at the top of the site, will offer high-quality care in comfortable surroundings. This marks the creation of Orchard Grove’s first business and is a major step forward for the community.
The home will be run by Amica Care Trust, a not-for-profit organisation, and is expected to welcome its first residents in 2026. Marking a significant expansion for the Trull-based business, the new care facility will boost the local economy, creating over 100 new jobs in a variety of roles.
Mercian Developments achieved planning consent for a state-of-the-art care home facility and has completed this acquisition in partnership with abrdn – global investment company and asset manager – which will fund the scheme.
The care home will be the first purpose-built facility within the Taunton area since 2009. It has been specifically designed around the needs of older people, those with disabilities, and people with dementia – as well as their carers.
Designed with comfort and wellbeing in mind, the care home will feature a range of facilities to help residents feel at home and stay active. These include:
- Every bedroom will have its own private wetroom
- Comfortable lounges and dining areas
- Activity rooms for hobbies
- A hair salon
- An on-site café
- A cinema room with bar
- A sensory room
- Outdoor terraces
- Generous landscaped gardens
The building has also been designed to be environmentally friendly, running entirely on electricity rather than gas. The building has been designed to meet BREEAM’s ‘Very Good’ standard – a widely recognised mark of excellence for sustainable building design that ensures the care home will be energy efficient and environmentally friendly throughout its lifetime.
The new care home will provide much-needed services for older people in Taunton and the surrounding area, while creating new jobs within the Orchard Grove community. Construction is due to begin soon, with the project now fully funded and ready to move forward.
